Differences between sleeve and tape film sealing
In the process of packaging products, film can come in various forms - most commonly as a flat tape or sleeve (i.e. film folded in half and sealed on one side). The type of film determines both the sealing method and the type of equipment needed to process it. Below we explain how sleeve film sealing differs from tape sealing and when to use each method.
What is a sleeve film?
Sleeve film is a rolled-up material in the form of a tube - it resembles a half-rolled-up ribbon, with one side already sealed. It is used, among other things, for packaging bottles, large cartons or heavy objects.
-
Faster packaging formation
Thanks to the existing side seal, only the other two sides (top and bottom) need to be sealed, reducing packing time.
-
Greater tightness
The film sleeve provides a better seal on one side, which can be beneficial when packaging bulk or liquid materials.
-
Possibility of creating bags
Allows easy shaping of bags or sleeves of different lengths - as required.
What is strip welding?
Strap welding involves joining two separate sheets of film (top and bottom) using a heat seal. This method is commonly used in machine and manual packaging.
-
Flexibility in packaging design
The shape and size of the packaging can be adapted to the specific product.
-
Better adaptation to irregular shapes
It is easier to form the packaging around a non-standard-sized product.
-
Requires greater precision
This method often requires both layers of film to be carefully laid and a material guiding system to be used.
Key differences between sleeve and tape welding
| Feature | Sleeve film | Tape film |
|---|---|---|
| Form of material | Sleeve (closed on one side) | Two separate bands |
| Number of seals | 2 (top and bottom) | 3 (two sides and top or bottom) |
| Performance | Higher | Slightly lower |
| Precision fit | Limited to sleeve width | Greater flexibility |
When to choose which method?
-
Sleeve welding
Works well for rapid mass production when the product has a standard shape and size. Used, for example, in the packaging of bottles, books or cartons.
-
Belt welding
Better when packaging irregularly shaped products, in non-standard quantities or when forming packages by hand.
Summary
The choice between sleeve and tape sealing depends on the type of product, the production rate and the packaging precision required. The sleeve allows for faster packaging, while the tape gives more flexibility in package design. The best results are achieved when the sealing method is matched to the specific needs of the production line and the type of film.
